2.1 Definition of Subtitle Translation

According to Wikipedia, subtitles are derived from either a transcript or screenplay of the dialog or commentary in films, television programs, video games, and the like, usually displayed at the bottom of the screen. They can be a form of written translation of a dialog in a foreign language or a written rendering of the dialog in the same language. To sum up, we can say that subtitle translation is the written translation of the spoken language of a TV program or film into the language of the viewers. The translated text usually appears in one or two lines at the bottom of the screen simultaneously with the dialogue in the source language.

2.2 Features of Subtitle Translation
Professor Qian Shaochang (2000) has pointed that film language has five characteristics. Firstly, it is verbal, which means the language or the dialogue must be understood with or without visual aids. As a rule, film is verbally decipherable. Secondly, it is comprehensive. As we all know, film is made up of the word, image, scene, film text, film medium, etc. In films, the audience can not only hear the dialogue, but also see the pictures and hear the music to help catch the plot. Thirdly, it is instantaneous. Compared with language of literary works, the utterance in films passes very quickly. When the reader meets difficulties in an essay or a novel, they can go back to them and analyze them again and again until they understand them. However, when seeing a film, the viewers cannot listen to the words again, which they have not understood. The captions on the screen disappear quickly. Fourthly, it is plain.  Readers for literary, religious, scientific or philosophical texts are well-educated. However, film is served for the masses. Audience for films is people from different educated levels, who may be linguistically specialized or even illiterate.
