简爱英语读后感Free As Noble Men
Free As Noble Men
Man is born free but ironically, he is, in all his life, in chains, the chains of desires, vainglory, jealousy and hatred.
I was told by John Reed, who was born rich, people are not free with a large fortune. John’s inheritance produced endless desires rather than satisfactions. The wealth put him heavily in debt and swept away the affection for his mother.
I got to know from Miss Ingram and Georgia Reed that we’re not free being vainglorious. Both of them are endowed with apparent beauty which made them the focus on any social occasions. The congenital quality, however, only resulted in their addictions to vainglory. They were dying for jewels, fashions, and most of all, wealth, as all these made them the envy of the world. Such miserable creatures were fed on flattery and starved to death as time tarnished their charm.
I concluded from Mr.Rochester’s ex-wife that we’re not free when living in hatred. She was always ready to take revenge as animosity filled her heart. Rather than relief, hatred rubs salt in her wound. She intended to kill Mr. Rochester for betraying herself. She plotted to kill Jane for falling in love with Mr. Rochester. Happiness would not be allowed and actually had never existed in the avenger’s heart. In the end, she destroyed herself in the ruins of Thornfield.
Men are miserably trapped in cages created by themselves. Wealth, Beauty, Hatred, vainglory will all go with the wind in time, revealing the foolishness of their owners. The true freedom is always invisible to human’s eyes but appears to a noble soul. The true freedom, as Jane told me, is the status in which people think freely, judge freely and act freely under the guidance of their heart.
However, the chaos of this confusing world often blinds our eyes, extinguishing people’s consciousness of freedom. There’s no doubt in China today that, it’s a time of the newly rich. Many Chinese people are much better off owing to the rapid development over the past three decades, but in the meantime, some have driven themselves far away from the freedom of their will, the true freedom for humanity. For short-term profit, the coal mine owners can give up their dignity, neglecting the security of miners. For dirty money, journalists can help cover the facts against the ethic codes of the press. For the chances of promotion, officials try to increase the GDP despite environmental problems. Just as Miss Ingram sacrifices her freedom for vainglory, John Reed for desires, we Chinese today are sacrificing our freedom as noble men. The boats of conscience sink when people are faced with dollars and RMB. The banks of human dignity bankrupt when attention was completely fixed on economic growth. The doors of freedom close when a soul fails to identify himself as a man.
As men, the greatest work by God, we ought to live a noble life----- a free life. That’s what Jane Eyre told us. We are born to enjoy the freedom of will and freedom of love, which accounts for our existence in the world.
In order to be free, there shouldn’t be any room for hatred. Love your enemies, as Jesus told and as what Jane did to her aunt: Jane finally kissed her aunt, indicating her forgiveness. Though Mrs. Reed never changed her prejudice against Jane, the suffering in Jane’s childhood stops aching.
In pursuit of freedom, we shall develop our sympathy. We share the happiness and sadness. Jane helped Mr. Rochester get rid of the past with her love and she found her Mr. Right in return. By sharing her inheritance, Jane assisted her cousins in achieving their dreams and she tasted the sweetness of having relations in return.
When a heart is filled with all those noble qualities, forgiveness, sympathy and love, there will be no room for evil desires, but an empty heart is always easy to be infected.
I’m fully aware of the life goals of our generation. While our parents struggle to fill their stomach, we shall make every effort to enrich our mind. Enrich it with love, forgiveness, sympathy and all other virtues necessary to a noble man, all necessary stones paving the way to freedom. Thus, it’s time to change the situation that the officials exchange the purity of the rivers for the rapid growth of GDP. It’s time to change the situation that the students learn only for well-paid jobs. It’s time to change the situation that we are still hostile to some foreigners as our grandparents did during the cold war and our great-grandparents did during World War II.
Change is on its way to us and it should be a time for us to be born free, live free and think free as noble men.
