看不见的人布鲁斯分析 第4页
In the Prologue, the narrator has an illusion. He hears a woman singing spirituals and a preacher preaching about the “Blackness of Blackness”. When the narrator comes out of that illusion, he hears a familiar music of Louis Armstrong: “What did I do to be so black and blues?” This song reflects the general condition of the black Americans. The lyric implies that the social discrimination has created a blue world for the black people. The lyric also implies black people want to change because of their color and the pain through their struggle in society. As the song of Louis Armstrong playing, the story of the narrator unfolds gradually, answering Louis Armstrong’s question. “What Did I Do to be so Black and Blue?” is the theme song.
The blues is the core of the novel. There are also many blues in this novel. At many critical situation, the narrator heard blues. The blues is like a healing power, helping the narrator to get through the hard time and reminding the narrator to find his own identity.
At college, the narrator dreams to become a successful person as Dr. Bledsoe. But because of a mistake, showing the dark side of the community to Mr. Norton, the narrator is expelled from college. He goes to New York to find a job with seven letters of recommendation by Dr. Bledsoe. On the way, he meets a blues print man called Peter Wheatstraw. Peter is singing a blues that the narrator is quite familiar in the way. The blues goes:

“She’s got feet like a monkey…
Legs like a frog--- Lawd, Lawd!
But when she starts to loving me
I holler Whoooo,God-dog!
Cause I love my baabay,
Better than I do myself…” (Ellison 2005)

The narrator once heard such singing at hometown. Some memories go back to his mind about the black character that he wants to keep away from.
When the narrator denies working for Mr. Emerson, he discovers that he is cheated by Dr. Bledsoe. He suddenly realizes Bledsoe’s ugly face of hypocrisy, sycophancy. He leaves the office and gets on a bus and hears a man singing a familiar song,

“O well they picked poor Robin clean
O well they picked poor Robin clean
Well they tied poor Robin to a stump
Lawd, they picked all the feathers round from Robin’s rump,
Well the picked poor Robin clean.” (Ellison 2005)

The lyrics remind the narrator to his heritage and the pain his ancestors went through. He feels he is so blind and ignorant like a Poor Robin that is picked again and again without knowing his pluckers.
The narrator 毕业论文http://www.751com.cn/the workers distrust him. Unfortunately, the narrator is badly wound in the factory explosion. After the explosion, he loses his identity and rebirth out of the factory hospital machine. When he is in the hospital, the old blues and children’s rhythms keep flowing in his mind. He illustrates his grandmother sat with his and sang with twinkling eyes:

“Godamighty made a monkey
Godamighty made a whale
And Godamighty made a’gator
With hickeys all over his tail…” (Ellison 2005)

The lyrics imply 本文来自辣文论文网the narrator began to come back to his own black heritage. After the accident, he is rebirth and tries to find out “who am I?”
6. The Spirit of the Blues in the Novel
“The blues is an art of ambiguity, an assertion of the irrepressibly human over all circumstance, whether created by others or by one’s own human failings. They are the only consistent art in the United Stated which consistently reminds us of our limitations while encouraging is to see how far we can actually go”(Robert 2001). The blues is the unique music of Afro-American. It is not only a kind of music but also a voice of their rebellion against the hardship that they suffer. The spirit of the blues is a kind of rebellion against the painful life
