3 Job hunting in foreign enterprises
3.1 Why Chinese college students choose foreign enterprises when looking for jobs
People hardly ever refer to today’s college students as“Heaven’s favored” anymore. Almost before the students have the time to savor the happiness of getting into college, the pressures of employment in China’s era reconfiguration pushes them into an even more intense competition. For those who intend to find a job in the future, what kind of enterprise is most sought after?
The Beijing Shiji Lantu (Century Blueprint) Market Investigation Company recently conducted a sample survey among 313 students of six universities-Beijing University, Qinghua University, Chinese People’s University, Beijing Normal University, Beijing Aeronautics and Aerospace University, and Beijing Foreign Economics and Trade University-to find what they thought about foreign enterprises. The survey showed that 63.9 percent of students surveyed had the intention of entering a foreign enterprise after graduation.
What impression do the majority of college students who wish to get into foreign enterprises have of these enterprises? The survey shows most of them agree that efficiency is high in these enterprises, that salaries are high, that management is standardized, that one can give good play to one’s personality and inventiveness, and that work pressures are great. A lesser number of those surveyed agree that in foreign enterprises Chinese and foreign employees are given different remuneration for their work, that cultural differences exist, that interpersonal relationships are less complicated, and that there are more opportunities for promotion. The college students approve mostly of the work environment and of the remuneration for work.

3.2 A steeping-stone to success
College graduates especially English major students always crave for working in a foreign enterprise when they graduate. It is reported that there are 600 thousand engineers trained in China per year, and the number is nine times of that in America. But only one fifteenth of those young engineers endue with professional technique as well as language communication ability of working in a foreign company. At the same time, according to a recent report form Mckinsey&Company, even though the quantity of college graduates in China reaches 310 thousand every year, less than 10% of which boasts basic ability of working in a foreign enterprise, including fluent oral English, teamwork spirit, experiences in training, etc.
However, succeeding in accepting an offer in a foreign enterprise is not pie in the sky in today’s society which is getting more and more open and public. A lot foreign enterprises pay more attention to employees’ personal characteristics than leading universities background and qualifications.

3.2.1 A unique resume
When faced with a large number of resumes, human resources directors in foreign enterprises tend to choose those from preeminent universities and appropriate majors first. Therefore, you must design a unique resume to prove that you are as excellent as students from top universities. What you need is to make recruiters favor you resume and then invite you for an interview. Requirements vary considerably in different foreign enterprises but they are almost as same as those in state enterprises and private-owned enterprises. But what the differences lie is that employees are required to speak fluent foreign languages. What’s more, they should be good at presentation.
3.2.2 Intelligence and diligence equal to success.
The first step to a successful interview is that you should not regard foreign enterprises as mysterious companies. If you would like to work in a foreign enterprise, to begin with, you must get to know what kind of multinational corporation you are interested in and whether you are competent in the job or not. Secondly, by searching for relevant information about the company through the Internet, you can come to know the circumstances of it. Then you’d better strive for an opportunity to work as a trainee in the interested foreign enterprise, so you will be familiar with the running of the enterprise and at the same time you can get practical work experience. Moreover, Chinese people’s enthusiasm in learning, perseverance, teamwork spirit and ability to handle stress are favored by foreign enterprises. Last but not least, for those who dream of being promoted to the senior level of the management department in foreign enterprises, what is more vital for them is to develop their skills of professional interpretation and public presentation, since they are indispensable qualities in foreign enterprises.
