2.1.2 Chinese overestimate the value of English for individuals and the country
Making a comprehensive view on the present condition of English education in China, you can easily find that one of the most serious problems of English education is that Chinese people overestimate the value of English for individuals and national development. The detail fact is that some English learners pursue English language with excessive psychological energy. They spend much time and energy on English learning without considering that different areas have different conditions, and different people have different needs of English level. Most Chinese people rush to learn English for raising their personal abilities, and they regard English as a good way to improve their personal development; just few people think that English is a kind of language tool, which is used for communication. It is no doubt that if all Chinese rush to learn English, we will lose our own traditional and valuable language culture. Just try to think that what will happen if you ask a tract man who just is good at sports on track and field or a basketball player to finish the long distance race. It is easy to imagine the negative results of people overestimating the value of English learning.
As English education in China is a kind of foreign language education, it aims at making a new tool to fill the lack of mother tongue by communication, information exchange, knowledge complement and so on. At the same time, English education can broaden the international horizons and humanism quality of Chinese students to improve the soft power of the country. Therefore, people often regard English as a language tool.
However, any kind of tool has a number of functions, and it is difficult for a tool operator to use all of its functions, so does the tool of English. China is a rising power; we need a number of high-level experts on proficiency in Chinese and English language, such as Lin Yutang, Liang Shiqiu, who are respected by American and English people. We also need a large number of advanced expertise in different academic fields that can be carried out at simultaneous interpretation and translation, such as Zhu Shenhao, Ji Chaozhu.We need a high level of English teachers, like Lee Funing, Wang Bilin;we also need lots of colleges, universities and the vocational schools to help students combine their major needs to learn part of the English language skills. Therefore, China's goal of English education should be stratified, and then learners can have their own ways to learning English according to their own conditions and demands. It is no need for them to be in pursuit of the abilities of using general language, cross-cultural communicative competence, as well as thinking and working in English from elementary school to university.
