People can communicate with one another not only through verbal communication but also through nonverbal communication; moreover, the latter is essential. Gesture is an important part of nonverbal communication. Without gestures, our world would be static and colorless. The movements of our arms and hands constitute another important way in which we broadcast interpersonal data.
Gestures play a major role in many aspects of human life. Gesturing is probably a universal; there has been no report of a community that does not gesture. Gestures are a crucial part of everyday conversation such as chatting, describing a route, negotiating prices on a market; they are ubiquitous. Gestures have been documented in the arts such as in Greek vase paintings, Indian Miniatures or European paintings
Usually gesture occurs unconsciously. It is no doubt that there are also many other gestures, for instance, head movement; shaking the head or nodding. Perhaps we learn those gestures and movements at an early age, and probably use and interpret them almost without thinking. Yet the gesture we use decides the quality of our communication to a large extent. It is important to note that gesture has different meanings in different cultures. How we can interpret gesture depends on the situation, the culture, the relationship we have with the person as well as the gender of the other, and a set of values, attitudes, beliefs, preconceptions, and expectations that are different from those of the other.
Gesture serves a variety of purposes.
Firstly, it can replace verbal communication.
Secondly, it can modify verbal communication. Loudness and tone of voice is an example here.
Thirdly, it regulates social interaction: turn taking is largely governed by non-verbal signals.
Fourthly, it conveys our emotions.
Finally, it conveys our attitude towards ourselves and towards the people we are communicating with.
These are particularly important for successful cross-cultural communication.

In speech, the lecturers often use some gestures while speaking. The gestures in the speech not only can help the lecturers to explain the problem more powerfully and calmly, but also can help them to light the emotion, such as Obama — the first black U.S. president did at his inauguration.

Both Chinese and foreign, when the presidents take office, they always make their speeches, which express their views directly. They may use appropriate gestures to add much more authority to their speeches.
