How to Memorize Words Easily 第5页
3.2 Neat tricks
Beside the above conventional methods, there are some neat tricks to memorize words, such as breaking down a word into some meaningful morphemes, using a picture, story or song, etc. In fact, English learners can create more tricks that are suitable for them.
3.2.1 Breaking Down a Word Into Several Meaningful Parts
Actually learning English words is an interesting thing .As long as we can use our imagination; the boring job will become an easy and funny one. Some English words can be broken down into several parts and then we associate them with some meanings to give life to the words. With the mental process, the words can be burnt in our minds. Take the word sanguine for example, which means ruddy-complexion. It is hard for us to learn it mechanically. However, we can try to use our imagination, this word could be divided into san+gui+ne, they are the same as the Chinese pinyin (三桂呢).Sangui is a famous person most of us know in Chinese history and he had a wife called Chen Yuanyuan, a legendary beauty in Chinese history. Thus we can imagine that his wife, whose complexion is ruddy, is asking where her husband is. One more example, charisma we can divide it into cha+ris+ma. ‘cha’ , ‘rise’, ‘ma’ could be considered as ‘China’, ‘rise’ , ‘Mao’ respectively. Thus we combine these three words into a sentence. That is, China rises Mao. Mao means Mao Zengdong, our Chinese famous leader who had a magic power to liberate China and make the Chinese people live a better life. Charisma means ‘a natural ability to attract and interest people and make them admire you’ (Longman dictionary) .So we can memorize the meaning of words firmly through our imagination.
 3.2.2 Using Jokes or Stories
Joke is also another fun approach to learn vocabulary. If students would like to distinguish and memorize firmly the three words—“class”, “lass”, and “ass”, they might as well have a try by the following joke.
Class, Lass and Ass
Professor Tom was going to meet his students on the next day, so he wrote some words on the blackboard which read as follows: ‘Professor Tom will meet the class tomorrow.’
A student, seeing his chance to display his sense of humor after reading the notice, walked up and erased the ‘c’ in the word ‘class’. The professor, hearing, the laughers, walked back, noticed the change in his notice. He said nothing but erased the ‘l’ in ‘lass’, and walked away, leaving the naughty students abashed there.
Here, maybe we have learned the word “class” which means “班级”. But the other two words “lass” and “ass” may be easily forgotten. From this joke, we will know “lass” means “lover”, and “ass” means “idiot”. So isn’t it a good way to learn English words?
3.2.3 Homophone
Some English words sound like Chinese words. Then we can associate a word’s English pronunciation with Chinese pinyin. In accordance with this, we can imagine some situations and form a story, so much so that we can remember the meaning of the word. For example, the word ambulance ,which means a special vehicle that is used to take people who are ill or injured to hospital Its English pronunciation is similar to Chinese pinyin- An Bu Neng Si (俺不能死),meaning that I do not want to die. You can make a story that you are very ill, but you do not want to die, so you call the ambulance to send you as soon as possible. I am injured and need to be sent to a hospital by car. The word agony( meaning painful) whose English pronunciation is similar to Chinese pinyin- Ai Guo Ni (爱过你).It means in English that I have ever loved you .You may imagine that you feel painful to break with someone you love deeply. It seems ridiculous to use this method, but in fact it will help us to memorize more words easily.
3.2.4 Riddles
There are various riddles in China, so are there in foreign countries. Like Chinese riddles, English riddles play the word games, according to the word form, pronunciation and meaning. Whether you could work it out depends on a sudden inspiration.
Riddle – a kind of material that applies knowledge into games, is also an assistant to help us learn English. Especially in vocabulary study, if we do riddles alternatively with each other, surely we will benefit from this kind of game. Such game for brains will stimulate our interest in English study and improve our listening and understanding. What’s more, riddles will help us to bear the vocabulary in mind more firmly while taking part in such games.
Riddles of words of puzzle almost makes use of the word’s spelling. Some of them superficially seem very “strange”, but as soon as the key to the puzzle is revealed, it turns out to be reasonable. For example, we will learn the two words “united” and “untied” effectively and efficiently in such riddle of words.
Which word, if we change the position of one of its letters, becomes its opposite?
   United or untied. (联合的—松散的).
In “united” or “untied”, by changing the position of the letter “I”, we’ll get the answer.
One more example “Which is one of the longest words in the English language?”
The answer is “smiles” which is formed by only six letters. Because there is one mile from the first letter “s” to the last letter “s”. Is there any other word longer than it? Of course not, it is the longest.
In a word, from the above-mentioned various riddles, we may know that they not only benefits students’ intelligence, but also promote their interest and confidence in English study.
3.2.5 Using Context
This method mainly focuses on the help of context in memorizing a word. By learning by heart a whole sentence, we can know clearly the meaning and usage of a word. For example, in the sentence ‘The lady is capricious, today she likes me and tomorrow she likes someone else’. So we will know the word capricious means changeable, and it can describe a person’s character. For another example, ‘they grumble about the weather .If it is sunny, they say it is too hot. If it is cool, they say it is too cold .They are never happy with the weather and they always grumble about the weather.’ From this, we will know the grumble means complain. Moreover, we can combine some words into an interesting sentence. For instance, these words baby, bachelor, bacon, badly, bacteria, balance, could be combined into a funny sentence. A bachelor without a baby lost his balance and fell ill badly, because he had some bad bacon with bacteria and was awarded a badge. Seemingly this sentence is a little bit strange, but it makes our vocabulary leaning vivid and interesting.
 3.2.6 Palindrome
There is something peculiar in English. There are many words or phrases that read the same backwards as forwards, called palindrome. Because English words are made of letters, some words’ spelling backwards is completely the same as that forwards. Such is another different approach of helping us to learn some special words easily, such as “pop (砰的一声), dad(爹), deed(行为), did(做), eve(前夕), level(水准), noon(中午), peep(偷看), sees(看), redder(较红的), civic(城市的) ”.
In addition to the words mentioned, there are also some sentences of great fun, reading and meaning the same backwards as forwards.
  Let’s read some examples:
  (1) Madam, I’m Adam. (2) Sit on a potato pan, Otis. (3) Step on no pets.
Palindrome means the same no matter reading backwards or forwards. By the way, there exist some words that reading backwards means differently,  such as “are (是)—era(时代), deer(鹿)—reed(芦苇), door(门)—rood(十字架), evil(邪恶的)—live(生活), meet(遇见)—teem(充满), not(不)—ton(吨), on(在……上)—no(不是), pan(平锅)—nap(打盹), part(部分)—trap(陷阱), step(步)—pets(宠物), ten(十)—net(网), tops(顶—spot(地点)”.
3.2.7 Similar Spelling and Comparison
We may also put words with similar spelling together, distinguish their meaning and remember them at the same time. It is another good method to enlarge our vocabulary. On the basis of the word with which we are familiar, we can learn more words whose spellings are similar. For example, based on this word east, we can extend to beast, feast, and yeast and so on. And when we learn this word obtain, we can expand our vocabulary like contain, maintain, sustain, retain. What is more, from the word name, we can remember fame, game, lame, same, tame simultaneously.
