ON ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF CHINESE DISH NAMES FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF SKOPOS THEORY

1. Introduction
With the ongoing of globalization, the variety of cultures around the world intermingle with each other and play a more and more important role in the competition of comprehensive national strength. During the past 30 years, China has quickened its pace to the outside world. The Chinese culture both extensive and profound has aroused the interest of many foreigners. The Chinese cuisine, being an indispensable part of Chinese culture, also caters to many foreign guests.

The Chinese people pay much attention to the color, aroma and taste. However, the present situation of the translation of Chinese dish names both home and abroad is far from satisfactory. It is not the first time that the improper translation is reported. What’s worse, some improper translation may even scare the foreign guests. For example, “红烧狮子头”is translated into “Braised Lion Head”. How can the foreigners dare to order and taste it? In order to unify and standardize the translation of Chinese dish names, the Foreign Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality and Beijing Municipal Bureau published a book named Chinese Menu in English Version during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, which arouse a hot discussion of the English translation of Chinese dish names.
The English translation of Chinese dish names is becoming more and more important in the exchange of cultures between China and other countries. Many dish name translations are not function-oriented and far from perfect from the perspective of Skopos Theory. Besides, the study in this field is relatively rare. Hence, it is an urgent task to standardize the translation. The thesis attempts to study the topic guided by Skopos Theory. First and foremost, part one introduces the topic and then part two mainly focuses on the overview of Skopos Theory, introducing some early views, representatives, principles and so on. Part three concentrates on the features and some of the translation problems of Chinese dish names. The next part of the thesis tries to put forward some
