1.3 The Layout of the Thesis
This thesis consists of introduction, conclusion and four chapters.
Chapter one makes a study of the background and the introduction of book and author. This chapter also introduces the main characters and the layout of the thesis. Chapter two discusses the Freud’s Psychoanalytical Theory. It mainly contains some information about Sigmund Freud, and his Psychoanalytical Theory. Chapter three discusses Freudian Psychoanalytical Theory in The Naked and the Dead. Chapter four discusses the production of power from the perspective of human being and country. Then, chapter five makes a detailed description for the influence of power to human being in The Naked and the Dead, such as Cummings's ambition for power, Croft's ambition for power, and the other person's ambition for power. This chapter will also introduce the writer's attitude toward power, totalitarianism and totalitarianism in American society. Finally, chapter six is conclusion.
2 Freud’s Psychoanalytical Theory
Although there are many psychological depictions in The Naked and the Dead, psychological studies of this novel are even far from being thorough and adequate, and there is still much space to be explored. As an infusive psychoanalytic theory, Freud‘s theory which refers to the structures of mind contributes to the research of this novel. In the year 1923, based on his structure of consciousness, Freud put forward the theory of personality structure which is the most important part of his psychoanalysis. In Freud‘s opinion, the mental apparatus of people is not a single object. It consists of three interrelated agencies: the id, the ego and the superego.
