The Naked and the Dead reflects with remarkable vividness nightmarish quality of war, and the psychology or even the psychopathy of those army men. The novel seemingly a war, in fact，is a political one, in the portrayal of the conflicts among army men Mailer prophesied the increasing totalitarianism. Like its predecessors, this thesis contains forceful and original analyses. These multi-themes of different researches help us fully and deeply understand this novel and build a basis for further research this novel. However, according to my understanding, Norman Mailer has Anti-war ideas in this novel. In our modern society, we can still perceive the element of unrest. Those elements will affect our peaceful life. So it deserves an analysis of The Naked and the Dead from the perspective of human nature. This thesis will make a deep study.

1.3 The Layout of the Thesis
This thesis consists of introduction, conclusion and four chapters.

Chapter one makes a study of the background and the introduction of book and author. This chapter also introduces the main characters and the layout of the thesis. Chapter two discusses the Freud’s Psychoanalytical Theory. It mainly contains some information about Sigmund Freud, and his Psychoanalytical Theory. Chapter three discusses Freudian Psychoanalytical Theory in The Naked and the Dead. Chapter four discusses the production of power from the perspective of human being and country. Then, chapter five makes a detailed description for the influence of power to human being in The Naked and the Dead, such as Cummings's ambition for power, Croft's ambition for power, and the other person's ambition for power. This chapter will also introduce the writer's attitude toward power, totalitarianism and totalitarianism in American society. Finally, chapter six is conclusion.

2 Freud’s Psychoanalytical Theory
Although there are many psychological depictions in The Naked and the Dead, psychological studies of this novel are even far from being thorough and adequate, and there is still much space to be explored. As an infusive psychoanalytic theory, Freud‘s theory which refers to the structures of mind contributes to the research of this novel.
