3 Different Thinking Modes of Chinese and English and Their Reflections on Languages
Language is the structure of thought and the carrier of thought; translation, as an action of language transformation from one to another, is not only an action of language exchange but also a kind of thinking activity. Consequently, different thinking modes of Chinese and English definitely influence C-E translation.
Owing to various reasons such as different geographical location, historical background, philosophical thought, religious belief and so forth, thinking modes of Chinese and English are formed distinctively. Chinese thinking modes and Western thinking modes are discrepant in six aspects.
3.1 Creative-Synthetic Thinking vs. Analytic Thinking
The ancient Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi once said: “Heaven and Earth and I came into existence together, and the myriad things with me are one” (Wang, 2009:5). The philosophy of Heaven-and-Human oneness has a great impact on Chinese up till now. As time goes by, Chinese have cultivated creative-synthetic thinking modes gradually. They consider themselves as an inseparable part of the great whole. The isolated individual is out of expectation. They pay much attention to grasp the general idea of the whole thing and they observe nature from general aspect. Here the author would like to take a famous Chinese poem as an example from which they can feel the typical Creative-synthetic thinking.
