Abstract Sense and Sensibility is one of the masterpiece written by famous British writer Jane Austin. It describes that two different characters of sense and sensibility have impacted the view of love and marriage of two leading characters. The two sisters have showed their own spouse-selection ideas. At last, sense defeats sensibility and they all live real happy lives with their own partner. This thesis studies the characters of personality firstly, and then analyzes their own sense and sensibility to reveal their view of love and marriage in order to help the readers understand the novel better.66088

1. Introduction
Jane Austin is a famous novelist in England. Her writing style is relaxed and humorous and full of comic conflict. As Austin went through her whole life in the countryside with powerful feudal forces, her life circle was very small. Her novels mainly depict the social communication between ladies and gentlemen. The conversations in her novels can reflect the family and social moral standards. She satirized the cynical and flamboyant phenomenon through novels and mock that people were stupid, selfish, snobbish and blind confidence. Her works are usually focused on the life of countryside of marriage. Moreover, her novel was iconoclastic and wiped off the false romanticism trend and developed the outstanding tradition of realism to prepare for the climax of the 19th century realism fiction. She had the meticulous observation ability and humorous writing style to write her unique writing world. Sense and Sensibility is Austin’s debut. It is full of humor and wit. The plot of the novel is kept by the marriage in the countryside in England. Elinor and Marianne are two sisters. After their father’s death, their father’s heritage was left for his ex-wife’s son John. The two sisters and their mother not only live a hard life, but also are faced with the problem of losing sponsor. Finally, they settle down in a country villa in Devin. In the countryside, Elinor falls in love with the young Edward (her sister-in-law Fanny’s brother), but at last, they break up. And Marianne has crushed on Willoughby, but suddenly he has something important to do, and has to go to London. After then, Marianne is so broken-hearted. Therefore, the two sisters are both separated from their loved ones. In the countryside, Lucy tells Elinor that she has a private life with Edward for four years. Though Elinor is so grieved, she decides to keep secrets for Lucy. She can control her emotion well. What’s more, when her sister Marianne is painful because of Willoughby’s departure, Elinor can also comfort Marianne at the same time and help Marianne out of the pain. Later, Lucy is against by Edward’s mother Ferrer, and Ferrer insists that Edward must get married with Morton’s only daughter. However, Edward is uncooperative, so his mother deprived his inheritance. In this period, Elinor is also board-minded to give notice to Edward that he can get a position of pastor so that he can get married with Lucy. Unexpectedly, Lucy turns to pursue a lucky man Robert. Because of this, Elinor and Edward can come to the end. On the other side, under the console of Elinor, Marianne is able to be out of the blue and changes her attitude which judges people with their appearance.
