The Mill on the Floss is George Eliot’ excellent autobiographical novel, which tells us a beautiful love tragedy. I. Introduction
The Mill on the Floss, published on 4 April, 1860, is an autobiographical novel which based on George Eliot’ early life. Setting its background in the Victorian age, it depicts Maggie’s desire for love and freedom as well as her sharp clashes with her brother and the surroundings. As a miller’s daughter, Maggie Tulliver is intelligent and compassionate, craving for freedom and knowledge. Love for her brother Tom is the dominating passion of Maggie’s whole life. But Tom, who is conservative and stubborn, never able to understand the affection, and treats her sister in a harsh way until his death. Maggie’s father, Mr. Tulliver, goes bankrupt for failing at a lawsuit, so from then on Maggie is thrown into the mud of sorrow and being lonesome because her father falls into critical ill and her brother dedicates himself to repay the debts. When Maggie is repressing herself with the doctrine of Christianity, Philip Wakem, her father’s enemy’s son, comes to her and helps her gain the happiness again, so they become close friends. However, their secret relation suffers such fierce opposition from Tom that Maggie has to surrender. After father’s death, Maggie accepts the offer of a teaching post. During a visit to her cousin Lucy, she falls in love with Lucy’s fiance, Stephen. Nevertheless, she doesn’t want to hurt Lucy and Philip, so she refuses Stephen’s entreaties for elopement, but stubborn Tom still renounces his kinship with her. At the end of the novel, a flood wolfs Maggie and Tom, who finally accept each other at the presence of impending death.
From the summary, we can see that Maggie, throughout her life, is entangled in a complicated personal net knitted by Tom, Philip and Stephen and she tries to get rid of it for many times. However, in contrast, she is firmly clasped and controlled. It is impossible for her to settle this problem when she is alive, so she has to reach a compromise with her beloved ones. It is because of Maggie’ three moral values: religious morality, marriage morality and sex morality. 论《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》中三对人物关系及其象征意义:http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_18684.html
