Abstract
Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind is a panoramic novel based on the historical background of American Civil War which uses the southern social life as the living environment. In the background of American Civil War, this topic cites the life changes of the main characters during different periods to show us a picture of South American social landscape as well as the changes of the fates of all the people during the enormous social changes. In the paper, the changes in the social member status after the civil war in the United States are carefully studied, which paves the way for the topic of this paper. The changes of social class relations of America after the Civil War are emphatically explored. Finally, it comes to the conclusion that the Civil War overthrew the social dominance of white people before war. The bloody and tyrannical slavery which tortured the black people a lot was abolished. Even though Civil War didn’t entirely make black and white people equal in social status, it let them begin to enjoy the rights as citizens like others and opened a brand new situation of the American democracy and republic.

1 Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind is on the basis of the American Civil War. Due to her vivid description of the breakdown of the Old South, She won Pulitzer Prize in 1937. Since the book came out, it has received great popularity and it was also made into a film which achieved a huge success, too. Even today we can still see the lively scene of the past life of American southern life from this book. This piece of work of Margaret Mitchell’s has been occupying a significant place in American and world culture.
Standing in the perspective of the southern rebels, the author described the whole story and gave a profound interpretation of the huge conflicts between the values of the South and North during the special period. The chaotic life of southern American people before and after the Civil War was also depicted in the novel. It portrayed many classic images of southern people, such as Scarlett, Rhett, Ashley, Melanie and so on. Their traditions, behaviors, mental ideologies, political attitudes, dressing and other things in the novel got a very detailed description. It is fair to say that Gone with the Wind vividly showed readers the social landscape of the United States of that period. And of course, we can see the changes in social class relations of American society through this symbolic book. 从《飘》看美国南北战争后阶级关系的变化:http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_18972.html
