A Study on Translator’s Subjectivity from the Perspective of Feminist Translation Theory——A Case Study of Two Versions of The Mill on the Floss
Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
In the mid 19th century, feminist movement arouse and experienced “three waves”. After the “cultural turn”, feminist translation turned up and became flourishing from regions to globalization.
In the west, the feminist theory has been noticed by scholars for a long time. The representatives include Luise Von Flotow, Lori Chamberlain and Sherry Simon etc. The book The Body Bilingual: Translating as a Feminine Rewriting is the first publication of the feminist theory. In 1980s, the feminist theory was first introduced into China by Zhu Hong, which failed to catch scholar’s attention. It’s not until the beginning of 21st century that people began to notice the feminist theory. A lot of scholars such as Liao Qiyi, Xu Lai, Liu Junping began to study the feminist translation theory.
Since 1970s, the translator’s subjectivity has become the hot issue in translation studies. Taking into account the translator’s socio-cultural background, experts began to analyze the translator’s subjectivity in translation and its influences during the translation process. The study of feminist theory extends the range of translator’s subjectivity. The researchers began to study the translator’s subjectivity from the perspective of feminism. Many scholars insist that translator should be the subject of the translation.
1.2 Structure of the Thesis
The thesis is pided into five parts:
Chapter one is the introduction of the thesis. It states the research background, outline of the thesis, the significance of the thesis. Chapter two is about feminism and feminist translation theory. Readers can have a brief understand of feminism through this part. Chapter three is the translator’s subjectivity in feminist translation. This part defines the concepts of translator’s subjectivity as well as the influence and importance of translator’s subjectivity. Chapter four is a case study. Through the comparison of the two versions of The Mill on the Floss from three aspects, we can have a better understand of what is translator’s subjectivity. Chapter five comes into a conclusion that translator’s subjectivity should be well taken advantage of during the translation process.
1.3 The Significance of the Research
The research results of this thesis will provide valuable evidence for people whether the study of translator’s subjectivity should be encouraged in current China, especially from the perspective of feminist translation, improve the quality of the translation and present better translation to the readers.
Chapter two  Literature Review
2.1 Gender and Feminism
    According to the book Translation and Gender written by the famous feminist translator Luise von Flotow, a new epoch called “era of feminism” rose in the late 1960s. And it has brought enormous influence on people’s life, especially these academic members.
2.1.1 On Gender
    Gender means the properties that distinguish organisms on the basic of their reproductive roles in the dictionary. Gender includes the differences between men and women, and extends its meaning from biology to sociology. At the biological level, men and women are distinguished by Y-chromosome, and gender used to be called  sex.
