Title Cultural Turn in Audio-Visual Subtitle Translation : a Case Study of the Emotional Elements in American Sitcom The Big Bang Theory
Abstract
The American sitcom The Big Bang Theory has been popular in China since it was broadcast in 2007, and the researches on it in the translation field are also very hot. Most traditional subtitling researches concentrated on the analysis of humorous elements in translation, but this paper endeavors to analyze the emotional elements of The Big Bang Theory from the perspective of “Cultural Turn ” within the framework of Functional Equivalence theory. This paper places much emphasis on the aspects of friendship centering around the actors, aiming to make readers know the process about how to convey cultural meaning and understand the cultural connotation of the sitcom, so as to achieve the goal of cultural exchange.

1 Introduction
With the process of economic globalization and the increase of exchanges among different countries, more and more foreign TV shows have been introduced into China. In recent years, researches on audiovisual media become flourishing, especially in the field of subtitle translation. This paper will take the American TV show The Big Bang Theory as an research object, endeavoring to find out the differences in the versions between two different cultures, particularly paying attention to the impact which posed by the popularization of the web, so as to make readers understand the realization process of culture turn in translation and subtitling.
1.1 On Audiovisual Translation and Subtitling
Since the popularity of TV sets, a large number of TV shows and films have swept over the world, then andiovisual translation has become a new trend in translation study. Traditional translation theories were used for reference to study this field. Nida E.A’s theory of functional equivalence was an outstanding one, which emphasizes the “functional equivalence” in the process of translation, and indicates that meaning equivalence has priority over form equivalence.
