1 Introduction
The Little Prince was written in the middle of the twentieth century throughout the Second World War. This novel tries to discuss love and responsibility. It begins with escape from love, carries out the course of taming others and ends with faith in love and responsibility. The work is full of poetic grief and loneliness, which reflects solitude and great depression in the course of searching love and responsibility.
1.1 The Significance of The Little Prince
The Little Prince is a novella and well-known work written by the French aristocrat, writer, poet and pioneering aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It has been translated into more than 250 languages and its circulation is only second to The Holy Bible, thus being voted the best book of the twentieth century in France. It was written during a period when Saint-Exupéry flied to North America subsequent to the autumn of France during the Second World War. The plot was based on his aviation experiences in the Sahara Desert. The Little Prince created several profound and idealistic observations regarding life and human nature, thus greatly recognized in the adult world with its profound point-view of philosophy. So it can be seen that philosophy doesn’t mean abstract and obscure, but on the contrary, it can be taken in by general public. Although it’s a fairy tale, it draws many outstanding scholars’ attention, leading to many scholars convinced that there is something significant behind the big work address themselves to study it from different perspectives. In the seemingly straight narration, the author tells readers a poetic and sad fairy tale in which the protagonist the little prince lives alone in an asteroid named B-612 until the emergence of a rose. But the little prince leaves his own asteroid soon after the frequent disputes with the arrogant rose and starts traveling several asteroids. During his trip, he came across all sorts of stubborn, selfish and greedy adults from different areas and different professions, including the king, conceited man, tippler, businessman, geographer, lamplighter, who are filled with vanity and make persistent efforts to pursue happiness, but never satisfied with their life. Then finally the little prince comes to the earth where he meets the snake and the fox, the most important role in this book, teaching him what is tame. What the little prince meets in his travel all teach him what is love and responsibility (吴震霆,2006:99). In fact, this is a trip to look for love and responsibility, during which, he is all along fully occupied in his mind with the rose. Ever since its publication in 1943, it has become the one of the best-selling books. And Since its first publication in the United States, the novella has been adapted to all kinds of art forms, covering audio recordings, radio plays, live stage, film screen, television, ballet, and operatic works. This novel narrates the philosophy of the love and responsibility from the child’s perspective and criticizes the vanity, rapacity, superficiality and blindness. From this book, it can be seen that searching for love and responsibility has a profound meaning. 试论《小王子》的爱与责任 (2):http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_28110.html
