Abstract The Joy Luck Club is written by Amy Tan, a famous Chinese American writer in the end of 1980s. It is about the experiences of four mothers immigrating from China and their four America-born daughters living in the United States. This paper mainly discusses the feminism in The Joy Luck Club. Based on methods of close reading, text analysis and document research, discrimination of women and the feminism awakening are explored in the paper, which accordingly reveals the oppressions given by men on women is inevitable. Only can women have the ability to liberate themselves. Hopefully this paper will be beneficial to the understanding of the novel.

I. Introduction
Amy Tan, the famous Chinese American writer, who was born in 1952 in Oakland, California. She attended medical school and obtained linguistics master degree. She began to write fiction when she was 33 years old. After that she published her first novel The Joy Luck Club in 1989, since laid her reputation in the literary world. Chinese American literature researcher Kitty has pointed out, “Amy Tan occupied a quite respectable seat in the classics exchange literature currently” (Wong and Cynthia 202). PicoLyer also commented on Tan’s fame, “A literary star had been born overnight” (Iyer and Pico 46).
Amy Tan has the rich experience of her life, so that her works are full of real emotion. She published her first novel The Joy Luck Club that was a famous Virgo in 1989. The novel is known as “the jewel its brightness dazzles the eyes”, and it causes a stir that “a rare legend in the USA publishing”. The novel focuses on the stories of Chinese American women, with the typical features of feminism. Famous American Women Kate Millett mainly criticized that “patriarchal society used the physiological differences as the basis and developed a series of human values in terms of the role of men and women, the temperament and the status. In order to achieve long-term domination of women, it also carefully maintains for the physiological differences from the ideology, biology, economics respect, education, mythology, religion, and makes it rationalize, pattern and internalize”(Ma 595). However, since ancient times, there is oppression, there is resistance. Amy Tan encouraged this kind of recalcitrant women in the novel. They would not like to succumb to the patriarchal, but choose to fight. The novel expresses the process about how completely different cultural background of the mother and daughter’s consciousness awake under the patriarchal culture of oppression.
