Abstract
O.Henry is a world famous master of short stories, and he is also the founder of American contemporary short stories. There are many classic works in his life. As the American humor master, his utilization of humor and irony cannot be underestimated. His knitting skills of the vicissitudes of life are endless. Humor and exaggeration give his novels new meanings. These skills impress the readers a lot.
Due to the significant influence of O.Henry in American literature, this paper focuses on the discussion of the writing styles of humor and irony and the purpose of this writing style, aiming at helping readers have a deep understanding of the real purpose of his writing styles and the deep connotation of his short stories.
The thesis consists of six parts, starting from a brief introduction of his life and literature achievements. Following the introduction comes the detailed analysis of his humor and irony writing style. Naturally, the writing styles will be introduced based on the aspects of plot, language, main ideas and other aspects. With the combination of this two writing styles, the fourth part makes an attempt to revel the main reasons of his famous humor and irony writing styles, including the social background and personal life experience. Based on the aforementioned analysis, the fifth part will arrive at a conclusion and give readers clear information that the real purpose of using this two writing styles in his short stories.

摘要 欧亨利是世界著名的短篇小说巨匠，同时也是当代美国短篇小说的奠基人。他的一生中，涌现了大量经典作品。作为美国幽默大师的欧•亨利在小说中对幽默与讽刺的运用也不可小觑。他对人世悲欢离合的编织技巧是无穷无尽的，幽默与讽刺都使整个小说有了新的意义，给人留下持久而又深刻的回。
基于欧亨利在美国文学界的如此重要的地位，本文将从欧亨利的短篇小说的幽默与讽刺这两大写作特色来对他的多篇小说进行探讨。旨在让读者通过从小说表面读到的幽默与讽刺来明白欧亨利写作的真实用意，从而进一步对他的写作艺术手法和小说内涵有更深层次的了解。
全文分为751个章节。第一章是对他的文学成就以及个人的生平做一个简单的介绍。第二章从标题，情节，语言，结尾等方面分析幽默的写作手法。第三章从语言，主题，人物刻画等方面分析讽刺艺术。而第四章则结合第二第三张的内容将从欧亨利的生活经历和当时的社会背景分析其幽默与讽刺写作风格的原因。第五章将探讨其幽默与讽刺的艺术手法背后的真实目的。在进行上述分析后，第751章将对全文进行一个总结。
