I. Introduction
Amy Tan’s first novel The Joy Luck Club creates a great wave in the book market and becomes a representative work in the field of Asian -American literature. The novel focuses on four Chinese American immigrant mothers and their American-born daughters who were born and educated in America. Due to differences of cultures, languages, race identity etc., the mother-daughter relationship becomes more complicated and subtle. In 1949, four Chinese women immigrated to San Francisco and started a club known as The Joy Luck Club, which is a gathering to play mah Jong, invest in stock and share stories about their lives in the form of vignettes. The four mothers all have their own views of the world based on their experiences and also want to share them with their own daughters. At first, daughters do resist their mothers intensely and none of the daughters have shown any respect or understanding to the wisdom and power of their mothers. However, the four Chinese mothers try their best to share their stories which are the fights against the old China. As time went by, mothers and daughters gradually covered the gap from conflicts to reunification. At last, the daughters understand and appreciate their mothers’ past, win their mothers’ acceptance and adapt to the American life. It becomes clear that the major theme of the novel is the mother-daughter relationship. Bittersweet and heartwarming, this book is actually for mothers and daughters. The club also binds Chinese-Americans here for a long time. 浅析《喜福会》中的母女关系:http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_35642.html
