Abstract
The Hunger Games Trilogy written by Suzanne Collins has received worldwide popularity as a youth novel. Katniss, the protagonist, is portrayed as a 16 year old adolescent who participated twice in the hunger games and later became a symbol of rebellion against the Capitol. Katniss’ personality has been developed and shaped by the environment she encounters, particularly the social environment she involved in. This paper analyzes the environmental influence on Katniss personality by first, giving an introductory overview of the novel, a background study of dystopian literature and related ideas concerning social determinism; then an in-depth assessment of Katniss’s personality was given by examining how Katniss’s personality is formed in the living environment around her before the games and from the both 74th and the 75 Hunger games to the appearance of District 13; last but not least this paper studies the social background of Panem in general so as to provide a macroscopic concept of how society lay their influences on ordinary people.

摘要作为美国青少年畅销小说书作家,苏珊•柯林斯,她撰写的《饥饿游戏三部曲》受到了极大的欢迎。小说的女主人公凯特尼斯在书中被刻画为一位16岁的青年,她先后两次参加了饥饿游戏,后又被十三区的反叛者利用,成为对抗凯匹特的象征。凯特尼斯的性格随她周围环境的塑造和影响下不断发展变化,尤其是来自社会环境的影响。本论文分别对凯特尼斯所经历的环境以及由于这些环境所塑造的性格进行叙述和总结:论文首先对小说进行了简要概述,介绍了反乌托邦文学的相关背景研究以及社会决定论的相关理论基础。接着从生活环境,战场环境,以及第十三区的出现三个方面详细分析了环境对凯特尼斯的性格塑造。最后从宏观上分析了帕纳姆王国整个社会大环境对人们性格的影响。
