Chapter One Introduction
When speaking of novel translation researches, their focuses are more often on the words, sentences or paragraphs, only a few of them are on the dialogues. Generally speaking, in every novel, dialogues play an essential role not only because they can add vividness to the whole novel and create an atmosphere of making the readers feel they are in the plots themselves, but also because they help propel the development of the plot, describe the objective environment, build personal characteristics and even reflect the main ideas of the writer indirectly. However, due to the lack of attention attached to the dialogue translation and the limit of relative research materials, dialogue translation becomes a hard nut to crack.
Despite of those existed difficulties, this paper intends to achieve a qualitative analysis of dialogue translation with two Chinese versions of Pride and Prejudice being study cases. The analysis will be implemented from the perspective of the Skopos Theory, specifically, the three basic rules of Skopos Theory. Through writing this thesis, the author tries to analyze that dialogue translation in the two selected Chinese versions of Pride and Prejudice are different from each other in translation strategies and methods under the theory of three rules of Skopos Theory. As there are not many studies on dialogue translation of novels from the perspective of Skopos Theory, the view of research in this thesis is meaningful.
This paper is pided into six chapters. The first chapter gives a brief introduction of the object, method, result as well as the meaning of this study, and the framework of this thesis. Chapter Two Literature Review
It is broadly recognized that language characters in the novel is the essence of the novel, for the characters portrayed, show character and other areas of great significance. It can be said that the novel dialogue translation quality will affect the entire novel quality of translation. Therefore, how to properly translate the novel dialogue vividly between characters is a continuous topic studied by researchers.
Recently, in China, many people have undergone the researches of dialogue translation, which can be categorized into three aspects. The first one is researching from the perspective of a particular translation theory. For example, Zeng Fanfen and Li Zhitao(2005) have pointed out in their journal article that the equivalency of pragmatic effect should be given prior attention, exampled by the English version of A Dream in Red Mansions. The second one is researching from the perspective of the effects of dialogue translation. In this regard, Ji Xiaobin and Shen Yingli(2007) have studied in their journal article the significant meanings of dialogue translation in making the personalities of source text’s characters reappear, exampled by three Chinese versions of Pride and Prejudice, from the perspective that dialogue is the efficient way of building characters’ personalities. The third is researching in the light of translation methods of dialogue translation. For instance, Zhong Ming(2009) has discussed the application of the some common literary translation methods including literal translation and ellipsis in his collected papers, and gives some advice on further promotion. But, there are not many studies on dialogue translation of novels from the perspective of Skopos Theory. 目的论角度比较《傲慢与偏见》中的对话翻译(2):http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_36705.html
