Abstract Euphemism plays a quite important role in language communication. Using euphemism appropriately can adjust people themselves better into social interaction. The traditional studies on euphemism is mainly about its semantic construction and it ignored internal construction elements of euphemism. With the development of cognitive linguistics, linguists combine euphemism with human cognition and people’s life experience. Euphemism demands cognitive explanation rather than traditional semantics theory. 40028
This article attempts to analysis the reasons of Euphemism formation from the aspect of cognitive linguistic, especially metonymy Motivation. This article first gives a definition of euphemism, then reviews studies and theories at home and aboard on euphemism have made generally. Based on the studies have made, this article discusses the nature of metonymy and pided the euphemism according to the phonetic, semantic, and grammatical formation means with examples from British National Corpus and our life. Those formation means of euphemism will be explained with the metonymy motivation. Through analysis of this article, it is concluded that euphemism is motivated by contiguous of metonymy cognition. To see euphemism from conceptual metonymy will provide more powerful explanation for English euphemism formation.

 摘要委婉语在语言交流中起着润滑剂的作用，正确的使用委婉语有助避免交流中的尴尬，摩擦，从而使人们更好地融入社会交往。传统的委婉语研究主要关注其语义结构层面，忽视了委婉语的内部组成要素和生成机制。随着认知语言学的发展，语言学家开始将委婉语与人类的认知和经验联系在一起。因此比起语义或修辞，委婉语更需要一种认知角度的解释。
本文试图从认知语言学的角度，特别是委婉语的转喻动机来解释委婉语的生成。本文讨论了委婉语转喻生成的本质，以期进一步解释委婉语的生成机制。转喻作为人们认知世界的方式之一，几乎无处不在，并对委婉语的构成和人们的思文方式造成了极大的影响。从概念转喻的角度，许多委婉语都能看成是概念转喻框架内整体间部分与部分的替代或整体与部分的替代。本文在现有研究的基础上，以英国国家语料库为语料来源，将委婉语按照语音、语义和语法构成方式进行了分类，并逐一给予了相应的转喻动机的解释，发现无论是哪种构成手段，委婉语的形式与其所指代的内涵之间都是转喻替代的关系。通过本文的分析最终得出转喻动机在委婉语的生成中扮演着重要的角色。
