The thesis is pided into six parts. First: introduction which introduce the Author and the background. Following it is body, Explore Scarlett’s cognition of life before the American Civil War in contrast to the life after. Sixth is conclusion.
II. Introduction of Margaret Mitchell and the novel
2.1 Introduction of Margaret Mitchell
The author of the famous America novel Gone with the Wind is Margaret Mitchell, she was born in Atlanta. Her mother was a suffragist and father was a prominent lawyer and president of the Atlanta Historical Society. Mitchell grew up in the stories of old South, city Atlanta and the Confederate Army and the brutal battles during the American Civil War. She once wrote in her dairy: “If I were a boy, I would try for West Point, if I could make it, or well I’d be a prize fighter - anything for the thrill” She was just at the age of fifteen. Mitchell graduated from the local Washington Seminary and started in 1918 to study medicine at Smith College. In her youth Mitchell was totally a feminist which influenced by her mother. This seemed go against with her father, a stubborn conservative - but she lived in a age full of Jazz and was wild about prose literature she wrote in her article “Dancers Now Drown Out Even the Cowbell in the Atlanta Journal Sunday Magazine.”
The turning point of her life is in 1919 due to Mitchell’s mother death. She dropped out from school and back home to host family with her father and brother. Then she married Berrien Kinnard Upshaw as a new beginning of her family life, but the terrible marriage was terminated two years later in 1924. In 1922, Mitchell worked as a journalist and wrote weekend special column, she started her writing career under the name Peggy Mitchell, she wrote interviews, article, sketches, and book reviews for the Atlanta Journal. She quitted her job four years later because of an ankle injury. John Robert Marsh, her second husband gave her support and encourage in writing. In1926 she started to write Gone with the Wind. The following ten years, she wrote thousands page novel to finish this novel. Her masterpiece could be rival War and Peace by Lev Tolstoy.
