摘 要夸张是英语言语交际中普遍使用的修辞手段之一。夸张的特点是为了突出某些事物鲜明的特征而故意言过其实。英语夸张修辞的目的是为了加强表达效果,而且英语夸张修辞也有很多种表现方式。幽默、诙谐、讥讽是夸张的效果之一,夸张还可用来表达快乐、悲伤、喜爱、恐惧、厌恶等情绪和感情。总而言之,英语夸张修辞在人们的生活中起着重要的作用,因此有必要对英语夸张修辞进行研究。本文研究采用文献研究法与实例分析的方法,并对英语夸张修辞的心理机制、英语夸张修辞的语用功能及美学功能进行总结。本文意义在于使人们对英语夸张修有更好的了解,从而在日常生活中更好地应用英语夸张修辞。40680

Abstract
Hyperbole is a kind of figure of speech which is widely used in English communication. The feature of English hyperbole is to exaggerate in order to highlight the distinct characteristics of something or some objects. The purpose of English hyperbole is to enhance the expressing effect, and there are various ways of English hyperbole. Humor, witty, and sarcasm is one of the effects of English hyperbole. Hyperbole is used to express the emotions and feelings of the speaker such as happiness, sadness, likes, fear, disgust and so on. In a word, English hyperbole is of great significance in people’s life, and it is necessary to make a study of English hyperbole. The study of this paper is based on documentary study and example analysis, and mental mechanism as well as pragmatic functions and aesthetic functions of English hyperbole are concluded. The significance of this paper is to provide people a better understanding of English hyperbole and to help them apply English hyperbole better in daily life.

I. Introduction
As a major type of rhetorical devices, English hyperbole is used to arouse the attention of people deliberately, and to describe objective people and things for larger or smaller. The purpose of using English hyperbole is to highlight the distinct features of some people or objects, in order to strengthen the expressive force of language. Hyperbole can be used in many ways such as describing objects, stating things, showing thoughts and ideas, as well as expressing emotions and feelings and so on. When describing objects, things can be described in a vivid way in order to deepen one’s impression, thus people can easily feel and see the objects. When stating some facts, it is used to state something that is difficult to say lively. Hyperbole can also be used to express the strong emotions and feelings of people due to the solid psychological basis of hyperbole. It is easily seen that hyperbole is widely used in literary works such as poetry, novels, prose and dramas etc. However, modern English hyperbole is widely used in people’s daily life and many other fields such as advertisements, book reports and newspapers and so on.
