Ⅰ. Introduction
With the profound development of the economic globalization and regional economic integration, the cultural communication between Chinese and western countries has become more and more important. Therefore, to understand the cultural differences between them is essential. Both Chinese and English have a long history, and the image of their idioms is implied, humorous, elegant and brief but vivid. These idioms are in close relation with the cultural tradition and reflect the cultural characteristics and information of the very nation. Hence, the English and Chinese idioms, especially the animal idioms, embody the great cultural differences between the two cultures.
Back in the 1920s, Smith published the book Word and Idioms, which became the representative of early research on idioms. Australian scholar Fernando published Idioms and Idiomaticity, thus helping push the research of communicative function of language to a newer and more outstanding position.
Some foreign linguists classify the animal idioms according to the animals’ behaviors. In the book Cool Cats, Top Dogs, and Other Beastly Expressions, Ammer sorts animal idioms into those about pets, birds, farm animals, park animals and animals in water. 从动物习语看中西方文化差异:http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_40143.html
