In Chapter Three, it explores heroine’s female policies to survive in the patriarchal society. She chooses the policies of keeping psychological distance from poisoning society and camouflage in male-dominating society. The isolated situation of heroine in her three identities as an immigrant, a servant and a prisoner, shows her intelligence and strategies of survival. Besides, she has a double vision, which she is both a participant and an observer, and always holds a critical eye on people around her and tries to exercise her own judgment. Camouflage is an effective strategy for Grace to strive for survival. She builds up a false self who is obedient, subordinate and quiet to conceal her inner thoughts or rebellion, manipulation and cynicism. There are deep contrasts between her superficial behavior and her inner mind. Finally, the heroine achieves redemption both physically and mentally.
Alias Grace reveals the theme of survival. This theme based on Atwood’s feminist perspective, vividly demonstrates Canadian historical and life value. This thesis aims to prove that women can earn their space in the patriarchal society through their struggle against victimization.
