Abstract Since the 1970s, cultural studies have become more and more popular in the field of translation study. As the product of cultural turn, foregnization and domestication have led to many arguments. Also in idiom translation, people have different ideas on employing foreignization and domestication.42979

Idiom is a group of words whose meaning is different from the single word. Idiom is the elite of a language. The disposition of cultural factors in idioms also brings difficulties to the translators.

A Dream in Red Mansions reflects the core culture of Chinese feudal society, and it uses rich idioms. Therefore, in translation practice, it is difficult to transfer the cultural characteristics in animal idioms to the English readers.

This thesis tries to make a comparative study of animal idiom translation in A Dream in Red Mansions based on a case study of the translation of idioms. The author finds a general principle that governs Yang and Hawkes’ translation: they recognize the cultural achievement reflected in idioms in the source-language text, and respect the source-language country and its cultures. 

By comparing the strategies of domestication and foreignization, we can make the correct understanding of cultural differences, thus promoting the exchange of different cultures and  the development of Chinese traditional culture.

摘要20世纪70年代,当文学研究在翻译领域越来越受欢迎。作为文化转向的产物,异化和归化之争逐渐成为当今翻译界争论的焦点。在习语翻译中，对归化与异化的使用有着不同的态度。

习语是一组词，其含义与单个词的含义不同。习语是语言的精华。习语中的文化因素的处理也给译者带来了困难。

《红楼梦》反映了中国社会的核心文化，它在动物习语的使用上有着丰富的应用。因此，在翻译实践中，很难向英语读者传递动物习语的文化特征。
