1 Introduction
Charles Dickens is one of the greatest writers of the nineteenth century who started a new area of realism with his masterpiece A Tale of Two Cities, which strongly reveals the dark side of British society during Victoria period. He has been regarded as the most outstanding critical realistic novelist and the master of language. Although Dickens’ works are limited by the time and social status, his novels deeply depicts the reality with his rich imagination and his sympathy to the poor people from lower class.
A Tale of Two Cities with a serious style is one of the masterpieces in the later life of Dickens. The king in France and the cruel nobles do not care about these poor people at all, but indulge in lavish life. The civilians cannot stand for the government’s incompetence and oppression, trying to overthrow the government and control Paris. But hared, violence and blood can’t soothe the sadness as good people get hurt in the process of this revolution. A series events of several families are told by Charles Dickens under the background of bloody French Revolution, filled with love, resentment and revenge. The two cities, London and Paris, are connected closely by the description of Charles Dickens. The plight of the French peasantry demoralized by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social issues paralleling with life in London during the same period are depicted in the novel. 狄更斯《双城记》中善与恶的对比(2):http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_43833.html
