Abstract Children’s literature makes great contribution to the growth and development of children, and its translation also plays an important role in promoting international communication and progress in this field. However, all the literary circles pay little attention to the children’s literature and its translation, and these studies in our country are still at an initial stage.43527
When it comes to children’s literature, it is regarded to be plain and easy. In fact, as a branch of literature, children’s literature has both common characters and its own features, which should be represented in its translation. Children’s features (their immature ability of reading and comprehension) require translators to take full consideration of their reading habit, cognitive capacity and educational level. The translation should not only retain the theme and style of original texts, but also make the understanding of children in target culture easier and enlighten similar thinking.
This thesis studies two Chinese versions of Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White, respectively translated by Kang Xin and Ren Rongrong. Through comparative analysis, the author of the present thesis intends to seek appropriate methods and strategies for translating children’s literature.
Skopos Theory, the core of Functionalism, is chosen as the theoretical basis of the thesis. It points out that the prime principle determining the translation process is the purpose (Skopos) of the translational action, that is the acceptance of readers in target culture. And more specifically, in children’s literature translation, translators are supposed to translate in line with the needs of kids. As to the two versions of Charlotte’s Web, the author of the present thesis finds that Kang’s version shows elegant style and excellent language proficiency, and that Ren’s version puts emphasis on colloquial speech and childish feeling. After a series of contrastive analysis and empirical survey with the guidance of skopos theory, the author draws a conclusion that Ren’s version is more suitable for children.
Due to limited time and ability on part of the author, the present design of the research is far from desirable. However, this thesis yields some meaningful findings which may help translators to better understand the essence of children’s literature translation, thus improving their translation quality and furthering the research in this field.
