An Analysis of Nick Carraway’s Multiple Identities in The Great Gatsby
Abstract
The publication of The Great Gatsby made its author F. Scott. Fitzgerald one of the most outstanding American modern novelists. And lots of critics give high praise on this novel. The author depicts the real social situation in American in 1920s in The Great Gatsby. One of the protagonists Nick Carraway is selected to be the narrator of the story. In other words, what Fitzgerald intends to express is all from Nick Carraway’s angle of view. So it is significant to analyze this character from all kinds of aspects, which can make readers have a better understanding of this novel. This essay aims to analyze the identities Nick Carraway performs from four aspects. First, his identity as a narrator is very important. The story cannot develop without his narrator. Second, he is a participant. He participates in all significant plots, because he is at the center of relationship between roles in the novel. Additionally, he is a morality spokesman of the author in effect. Fitzgerald expresses his moral judgment to different people from Nick Carraway’s angle. What is more, Nick Carraway acts as a morality defender. The virtues he defends include sympathy, responsibility, honest, tolerance and rejection to indulge in money.
