1.2 Significance of the study

The main purpose of this study is to analyze the translation of numerals in Chinese classical poetry from the perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory. And the significance of this study can be seen in the following two parts.

    On the one hand, the study will collect numerals in different Chinese classical poetry. Then, the features and characteristics of numerals will be carefully studied in order to make a comparison with those in western countries. By the comparison and study of cultural connotations and differences of the English and Chinese numerals, we can not only get a better understand of the nature and essence of the numerals, but also have a better knowing of the culture and tradition of different countries. Therefore, the culture awareness can be well developed so as to promote better exchange and understanding between nations. 

    On the other hand, through this study, the obstacles in the numeral translation process will be identified. Besides, the different functions of numerals in Chinese classical poetry will be analyzed. By using the Functional Equivalence Theory, different principles and methods of numeral translation consistent with their functions will be put forward. Thus, by coming up with different translation approaches, it does help to adjust the limits of the numeral translation in Chinese classical poetry as well as to improve the translation quality.
