Abstract Fortress Besieged is philosophical and full of humor, which can be described as the best metaphor research corpus. With a large number of new and unique metaphorical expressions in it, they pose a great challenge on any translators. In this paper, the relevance theory will be used to discuss the translation of metaphor in Fortress Besieged. At the very start, this paper attempts to briefly introduce Fortress Besieged and metaphor. And in the following chapters, I present previous studies on metaphor in Fortress Besieged and on the translation of metaphor from the perspective of relevance theory and regards it as a theoretical support. Next, I analyze and discuss the examples selected from Fortress Besieged to find the translation strategies or methods used in those metaphors. I find that most metaphors in Fortress Besieged are translated literally. In order to retain the metaphor, the translators use the methods of addition, annotation and supplement. At the end of the thesis, after discussing the major findings, I draw a conclusion that how translators deal with metaphor ,why they translates in such a way and what effects have been achieved. 49127
