Abstract Language is generally considered as the capacity to acquire and employ complex systems of communication by use of sounds and conventional symbols. Potentially, language is a communicative medium capable of expressing ideas and concepts as well as moods, feelings and attitudes. Body language, as a powerful kind of non-verbal communication, takes a complementary role to help people convey information and even to improve communication, which will be an essential power to break up language obstacles in intercultural communication.52815

Body language is widely used not only in communication, but also in novels. The unique functions and features of body language play a significant role in characterization in novels. This paper will take the body language of Wang Xifeng in A Dream of Red Mansions as an example to interpret her characterization. In the novel A Dream of Red Mansions, many non-verbal means of communication were employed, which were very helpful in presenting the characters' personality. And Wang Xifeng is an extremely typical example who is depicted with body languages to interpret her own personality and also with her personality to interpret her body language.

The paper falls into six parts. The first part serves as an introduction. The second part is about a review of the theories on body language. The third part aims at analyzing Wang Xifeng’s body language. The fourth part probes into the functions of Wang Xifeng’s body language. The fifth part is a conclusion.

摘要语言通常被视为是通过声音和传统符号获得和使用复杂交流系统的一种能力。语言是一种潜在的交际媒介，能够表达想法和概念、情绪、感情和态度。作为一种强有力的非语言交际,身势语在帮助人们传递信息,甚至改善沟通上起着互补性的作用。当然在跨文化交流中,对于打破语言障碍也将是一个不可或缺的力量。

身势语不仅广泛地运用于日常的交际中,而且在小说中也得以体现。身势语自身的独特功能和特征对人物的刻画起着重要作用。本文将以《红楼梦》中王熙凤的身势语的运用来解读其人物形象塑造。小说《红楼梦》在人物塑造上采用了许多非语言交际手段进行刻画,这对于展示人物的性格非常有效。王熙凤是小说中一个极其典型的例子，作者在对王熙凤这一角色进行刻画时，运用了大量的身势语诠释其性格，同时也能通过对其性格的描述来解读她的身势语。

本文由六部分组成。第一部分是介绍。第二部分是关于身势语理论的一个回顾。第三部分旨在分析解读王熙凤的肢体语言。第四部分主要探究王熙凤身势语所起的功能作用。第五部分是结论。
