Abstract From the feminist perspective, The Grass is Singing analyses utopia which is written by Doris Lessing. Lessing deconstructs the heroine’s utopia by delineating the changes of surroundings and Marie’s inward world through the sides. As Marie grows up and her inner thoughts are changing, the utopia complex has gradually become highlighted. Lessing depicts the changes of the protagonist’s psychologies to advocate the caring for females. For no one has studied the utopia complex in The Grass is Singing from the feminist perspective until now, the thesis opens a new world for the research of the novel. In addition, it also guides people who are fond of imaging to feel the beauty of the down to earth lives.67078

1. Introduction
1.1 Doris Lessing and Her Works
Doris Lessing is one of the most excellent and struggling contemporary British novelists, who is the oldest female Nobel Prize winners when she wins the prize. While she had written more than ten novels, one collection of poems, two dramas, seventy short stories, many papers and reminiscences. Her first novel was an immediate success as soon as published which is called The Grass Is Singing. The novel sets a black man kills white people as the center and the mistress of the case reveals that the complex types and the sharp oppositions of race relations in the British colonies in Africa. This novel, published in England in 1950, received praise from critics and readers. From then on, she kept rising to fame on the literary world in Britain. The main two factors of her growth are the reality of Africa and interest on books.
As we all know, Doris Lessing was born in Persia,her birthday was on October 22, 1919.When she was five years old, Lessing’s father moved to southern Rhodesia with her family and worked on a farm. The farm life for Lessing’s father is not a heaven, but it is her heaven. Lessing has some cockeyed delusions about becoming an outstanding person so that she has been spending much of time thinking about her future. While the South African grassland had a great impact on her later works. “The veld itself is one of Lessing’s most enduring images throughout her work--repeated with variations, not all of them necessarily in Africa” (Pickering, 2001: 2). Lessing has described her childhood as an abnormal mix of some pleasure and much pain. Her mother was very strict with her. Lessing was first sent to a convent school, and later sent to a high school without boys in the capital city. However, she soon sent down from the school. At that time she was thirteen, and it was the final result of her formal education. But like other women writers who did not graduate from high school from South Africa, Lessing devoted herself to a self-educated writer. Recently she said her childhood was so unhappy that seemed to produce fiction writers. After she was away from school, Doris Lessing took great pleasure in books; as a result, she benefited a lot from them. So Lessing looked back upon her childhood, which is a mixture of joys and pains. When she was 19 years old, Lessing married Frank Wisdom and gave birth to two babies. During the Second World War, she became a member of the reading club, in 1945 she married the German refugees Gottfried Lessing, who once served as an ambassador to Uganda in East German. But in 1979 he was killed because of a local rebellion who against the local dictator Indi Amen. As a result she porced again in 1949, at the same year, Lessing moved to the UK with her youngest son. She was poor with only a roll of the grass is singing of the manuscript in her luggage.
