Abstract William Makepeace Thackeray is a famous English novelist in the 19th century and Vanity Fair is the most famous novel created by him. The novel describes two completely different female images--Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Sedley. They have different characteristics, which attracts the scholars from home and abroad. This essay will focus on the contradictory characteristics of the two female characters, the tragedy of them and then expose the hideousness of the capitalist society. The essay summarizes that the two female characters are both the representatives and victims of the capitalist society, and their tragedies are associated with their characteristics and the society. The author thinks the two women both have merits, Becky is smart and beautiful and Sedley is kind-hearted and tender. At the same time, they also have their demerits, Becky is cunning, greedy and selfish and Sedley likes to rely on other people and is inclined to submit to her fate. We can see that Thackeray’s portrait of the two contrasting women images expresses his sympathy and criticism to women. Since he is a male writer, he still can not get rid of some Victorian values in that society. In this novel, the author also expresses his view of how women should live in that society. 33841

摘 要威廉 梅克比斯 萨克雷是十九世纪英国著名小说家，《名利场》是他的代表作。《名利场》塑造了两个不同的女性形象-艾米莉亚和丽蓓卡，她们有着截然不同的性格特征，这吸引了许多国内外学者对萨克雷本人和由他所塑造的女性形象的研究。本文将研究萨克雷笔下两位女主角的矛盾性格，由她们的性格所造成的悲剧结局，以及作者通过她们揭露的资本主义社会丑恶的现实。通过对于两位女主角性格中优缺点的论证，笔者总结出，这两位女性都是当时社会女性的代表，并且都是当时的丑恶社会下的受害者，她们的悲惨遭遇和她们的性格、当时社会环境有着必然的联系。笔者认为，这两个女性性格有她们的优点，贝基美丽聪慧，艾米莉亚温柔善良；同时，她们又有自身的缺点，贝基狡猾贪婪，艾米莉亚依赖他人、屈从命运。萨克雷虽然对于文多利亚的不同女性有了深刻的认识，但是始终无法摆脱那个时代男性的固有价值观。与此同时，作者对于女性应当用何种方式生活发表了自己的看法。

Introduction
William Makepeace Thackeray was not born in England, he was born in India. He was sent to England when he was only five. He finished his studies in England. Despite the early death of his father and the separation from his mother, his early years was full of promise. However, Thackeray never completed his degree. Gambling and successive bank failures resulted in the loss of his fortune when he was still quite young. He loved his wife, Isabella, yet Isabella’s development of severe mental illness left him a widower emotionally.
