Abstract As a famous novelist，critic of literature，playwright and prose writer, Henry James occupies an important place in Britain and American history of literature．His novels mainly discuss in such two different cultural collision，the female characters still hold to their own spiritual morals and conscience and pursue freedom and happiness．This paper takes two female images in Henry James’s novels as the point of tangency, analyzing female images and revealing their choices，confusions and pursuits in the European and American cultural collision，and some other deep implications.
This thesis includes six chapters and a conclusion. In the introduction part, it gives a brief summary of the writer’s life, literary reputation and the significance of writing this essay. Chapter Two presents different perspectives to study the two novels. Chapter Three explains the origin and significance of European and American cultural theme，and unique angles of new women．Chapter Four puts its emphasis on discussing the new woman in Henry Jame’s two novels. Compared with Daisy, Isabel reflects clearly James’s idea about inpidualism．Chapter Five dwells on the comparison between Daisy’s Tragedy and Isabel’s Tragedy from the life they experienced. The last part is the conclusion. From the female perspective in James’s novels to view the cultural conflicts we can see the process from exclusion to inclusion.
