Abstract: The “A Dream of Red Mansion” has a great deal of natural images, which have various usages. Sometimes they refer to the climates, sometimes they refer to the different moods of people and sometimes it refers to the things in the world.That is to say, the natural images in the novel include many cultural meanings. The study of the English editions of Chinese classic novels does good in helping us better understand the original novels. It helps us know about how the different translation strategies affect the process of translation and inspire us that how we can do the translation better under the different translation strategies and better bring the Chinese culture to the world. This essay tries to analyze the translations of Hawks and Tang Xianyi by comparing the different choices of words and expressions to induct the effect of the different influence of the translation strategies.70310

Chapter one:  The ”A Dream of Red Mansion” is the masterpiece of the Chinese classic literature. It fully shows the broad and profound Chinese culture like an encyclopedia, with great value in study and appreciation. Therefore, it has been translated into over ten editions of different languages in the world and countless scholars have been studying the Redology over the years. In the “A Dream of Red Mansion”, there are many natural meanings. The most famous two translator, Yang Xianyi and Hawks gave us different translation works, especially in terms of these natural meanings.In this case, i will gave the examples and analyze them from the angle of domestication and foreignization. This analysis can help thoroughly know about the original work. What’s more, it can help us better know the influence of translation strategies on the translation process and help us carry on the work of translation more fluently.文献综述

Nowadays, wind is a kind of climate, but since ancient times, people’s attitudes towards wind have changed a lot. in the beginning, people were in awe of wind and regard it as the breath of the gods. With the natural power’s influences on human beings’ lives get more slight, people’s fear turned out to be love. People love the way that wind exists in the world. In the “A Dream of Red Mansion”, wind is not only one kind of climate but also a high fluency natural meaning. As a natural meaning of climate, it totally exists 68 times. Wind has various meanings in this novel. It inherited and developed the meanings of former poems. What’s more, it mixed the unique characteristics of the characters and endowed it with special meanings. In this degree, the readers, including Yang xianyi and Hawks may have different understanding of the novel.

Yang Xianyi, aiming at preserve the book’s Chinese cultural as possible as he can, loyal to the original work, used the foreignizing translation. On the contrary, Hawks adopted the domestication translation strategy in order to make his countrymen understand this novel. As a result, the two translation works have great differences in words, phrases and even sentences.
