Abstract
Song of Solomon is the third novel by American woman writer Toni Morrison, the winner of Nobel Prize for literature in 1993. In 1978, the next year right after its publication this novel won the National Critics Circle Award and the Letters Award. This novel symbolizes the change of Toni Morrison’s writing style.
This novel of Morrison, a black writer, is based on the black’s life story of American blacks and it contains deep black consciousness made up of race, class, culture among many other factors. Morrison’s many other novels also involve this black consciousness, but the idea of black consciousness is most concentrated in the Song of Solomon. This paper aims to clarify the way Morrison explains her black consciousness through identity positioning, cultural features and racial attitude in this novel and also show the charming of the novel.
This paper clarifies Toni Morrison’s black consciousness through three aspects. Firstly, she accepts the black identity. Secondly, she indicates her proud for black cultural heritages through the black myth, the black traditional culture and the black national consciousness. Finally, she uses the racial attitude between Milkman and Guitar, and Milkman pursues for freedom and equality to show her desire for racial freedom.
Toni Morrison makes her own unique explanation on black consciousness and adds the charming of the novel by writing the most familiar world she lives. It plays an important role in helping readers to understand better the literary value and realistic significance of this work.
