quantities of liquid additives into a powdery mass.
Complete blending of granulated polymers is achieved by cross circulation of the process material by means
of the planetary motion of the screw conveyor, also aided by the constant mass transfer between the two cones.
The operating volume of the mixers may be anywhere from 10 to 75,000 liters. For medium-volume mixers
(3000 liters), an electric motor with a rating of 4-5 kW is needed. Blending time depends on the volume of ma-
terial loaded in the mixer, and runs from 3 to 8 rain. Mixers can be fitted with heating or cooling jackets if desired.
The Stuurmans and Vanginneken tubular mixer (Fig. 7) is designed to meter in small quantities of liquid com-
ponent into a free-draining mass. This machine consists of a cylindrical tube 400 mm in diameter enclosing a rotor
shaft spinning at 3000 rpm and supporting six wedge-shaped blades. The mixer is continuously loaded with a charge
of free-flowing solids. The liquid component is introduced into the stream of free-flowing friable solid mass in the
rotation zone of the rotor by means of an array of nozzles set in the tube body in one of its horizontal cross sections.
The mixture so formed is discharged via an inclined side discharge port. The mixer drive power rating is 30 kW.
Depending on the bulk density and ratios of the components, the mixer capacity ranges from 6 to 15 tons per hour.
Henschel exhibited a series of high-speed mixers (Fig. 8) for processing suspension and emulsion type poly-
vinyl chloride compositions. The mixer housing is stainless steel and is oil-heated and water-cooled. The oil is
heated by means of an electric heater unit top-mounted on the housing in the spacing between jackets. The pro-
cessed mass is unloaded through a hole in the bottom of the mixing chamber; the airtight cover is opened by means
of air power cylinders.
