1. Introduction
1.1 Research Background
With the development of Internet technology and cultural globalization, audience can have access to foreign TV series or movies through different channels rather than exclusive official introduction decades ago, which triggers different versions of translation. From the perspective of functionalist theory, this paper intends to compare two versions of translation, dubbed version and subtitled version, through analyzing the popular British TV series “Downton Abbey”.
1.2 Research Issue
“Audiovisual translation” (AVT) is also named “screens translation” (Wilkinson M
2005), emphasizing the channels of the medium where the translation product appears, namely the TV, movies, or videos.
There have been two versions of AVT of “Downton Abbey” in China: one is translated by the amateur translators who voluntarily gathered on the Internet to introduce the series drama; the other one is both translated and dubbed by the professionals and broadcast through national TV station, China Central Television (CCTV).
