Abstract
Alice Monroe is a Canadian women writer who won the Nobel Prize for literature. In her short story, the main topic is about happiness, anger, sadness and joy. Her story concerned about women’s marriage, daily life, family chores and emotion. This paper analyzes Alice Monroe’s Runaway from the perspective of postmodernism and use the theory of postmodernism and postmodern literature to analyze the characters, the details and the structure of this story.

1. Introduction
Runaway is a short story which wrote by Alice Monroe, this story narrates the lives of normal people who live in a small town. And all of the spots in the story are small things which take place in the small town’s daily life. While the special writing techniques of Alice Monroe, make this story full of imaginary space and also make the readers think by their own.
In this story, post-modernism is one of the important writing techniques. Alice Monroe uses post-modernism to make this story more attractive and interesting. Due to this writing technique, this story causes the readers to think deeply. Therefore, through research, this paper expects to analyze Alice Monroe’s Runaway from the perspective of postmodernism.
2. The Research of Alice Monroe and Runaway
Alice Monroe is a Canadian women writer who won the 2013 Nobel Prize for literature. In Alice Monroe’s short stories, she uses the writing techniques of postmodern literature widely. In her short stories, the main characters of them are the women. Her short stories focus on the description of women’s daily life, marriage and family. And the main topic of her works are happiness, joy, anger, death, life etc.
Alice Monroe, among her various topics and themes, mainly concerns about female issues. She not only explores the role of women in personal relationships but also probes to the nature weakness and defects of women themselves. Her works cover the experience of women at different ages ranging from adolescent girls to middle-aged women to the elderly and aged women. (Lai, 2011)The readers can easily find the progress of self-improvement of women in her works.
In Alice Monroe’s Runaway, she describes the male chauvinism of the male characters. And describes the internal world of the women characters. From these details, she shows the differences of the two sex, in order to reveal the living condition of women. Then, because of the living conditions, women want to escape from their lives, this kind of escape is a rescue of the self. (Tan,2011)The reason of their escape is their sex. They feel as a women their living condition is difficult and they fear of this kind of life.
