Abstract
In recent years, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer has received extensive attention of critics. Many studies focused on analyzing the characters, language characteristics, and etc. However, the articles which parse the text from the perspective of writing styles are rare. Considering that domestic researches on the art of the writing styles of the novel are not sufficient, integrated and systematic, this paper will combine with the rhetoric theories of humor and satire in the novel at home and abroad, explore the use of humor, satire and local color in this novel of Mark Twain, I hope that it may have some influence and significance on the novel.

Ⅰ. Introduction
As a literary masterpiece, The Adventure of Tom Sawyer is written by Mark Twain in 1876. Mark Twain has made significant contributions to American literature. Before him, the mainstream American writers were under the influence of European literature, while Mark Twain’s way of thinking, his language, and especially his humor have the feature of American local colorism. “Local colorism”, the most outstanding feature of his novels, represents the language style, custom, and way of living in a particular region. Furthermore, Mark Twain’s colloquial prose marks the beginning of the tradition of American colloquial literature. Writers like Anderson, Hemingway, Eliot, Faulkner, etc. all have been influenced by him to some extent. Faulkner once said,“I deem that Mark Twain is the first writer in America that deserves the name, and all of us are his successor”. Besides, humor and irony are major techniques used in his creation. Scholars from home and abroad all have been doing in-depth researches on Mark Twain's humor and satire. For instance, Walter’s study summed up the foundation of Mark Twain’s writing techniques in his works. Franklin explores the way how Mark Twin uses irony in his works. Furthermore, Franklin also discussed the relationship between The Adventure of Tom Sawyer and Twain’s personality. As it is known to us all, Mark Twain’s writing style has changed from the slight humor in his latter works to irony in his last works.
