Acknowledgments My writing of this thesis has smoothly come to an end, and I hereby would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the following people for their selfless dedication and contribution to my thesis. 34311
One of the greatest joys during the writing of this thesis is discussing with people who have given not just their time and attention, but their hearts and souls as well. I would like to thank the following people for their dedication and contribution, without which the path to the finishing line would have been a whole lot more bumpy.
My profound gratitude first goes to Miss. Yang Hui, my supervisor, who has generously shared her inspirational and provocative ideas during many of our face-to-face discussion sessions. I will never forget that every Tuesday evening during this period, she has spared much of her precious time for me, reading and revising my paper—paragraph by paragraph.
I am also grateful to my classmates and roommates for their encouragement, support, comments and wise advice.
Last, I wish to devote this paper to my parents for their everlasting dedication that they have shown since I was just a little child.
Abstract
Wuthering Heights is a bizarre, strange love tragedy which mainly depicts the love triangle of the three main characters; namely Heathcliff, Catherine Earnshaw and Edgar Linton; and Heathcliff’s revenge to the Earnshaw and Linton family. Since its publication, the novel has aroused get concern in the critics. The work was studied from many different perspectives like feminism, moral discrimination and social observation. Author of this present thesis believes that the three main characters are all typical tragic figures. In addition to the external social and environmental factors, the anxiety resulted from the unbalanced personality is also one of the important reasons for their suffering and tragic lives. Therefore, this thesis attempts to probe into the characters’ inner world in light of Sigmund Freud’s theory of anxiety so as to see what inner conflicts and struggles they possess that finally lead them to their tragic destiny.
