Title Feminism Interpretation in Jo’s Growth Process of Little Women
Abstract
Little Women is published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869 respectively, which is written by American female author Louisa May Alcott. Alcott was an abolitionist and a feminist. She took an active part in feminism movements, such as advocated for women's suffrage and became the first woman to register to vote in a school board election. The novel tells us a story about four girls’ growth process during the American civil war while their father was in the army. After experiencing lots of things, they finally grew into mature little women. Jo March is the second elder girl in this family, as well as the heroine of this book.
In this thesis, firstly, the author would introduce what feminism is, and its influence in Alcott and Little Women. And this thesis gives a brief introduction of this book, and the background of the author and this book. Secondly, this thesis gives a simple review of Little Women, and analyzes the main character--- Jo, in this book. This thesis focus on Jo’s growing process to see how feminism affects her in her pursuing of freedom and equality.
In a word, this thesis interprets Jo’s growing process from the perspective of feminism so that people can understand the background of the novel better and understand what the author really wants to convey.

1 Introduction
Little Women is published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869,and is written by American female author Louisa May Alcott. The novel tells us a story that four girls’ growth process during the American civil war while their father was in the army. So the girls lived with their mom, and after series of things, they finally grew into mature women. Jo March is the second daughter in this family, as well as the heroine of this book. In this book, Jo is the most popular figure because she is a boyish girl and she keeps pursuing freedom and equality. At the end of the novel, she becomes a real mature woman.
Alcott’s best well known novel is Little Women. She wrote the story loosely based on her own experience. The novel follows the lives of four sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March—telling their lives from childhood to womanhood, and is actually based on the author and her three sisters, which means it is a Semi-autobiographical novel. The novel was very well received and is still a popular novel today. Alcott was an abolitionist and a feminist. She took an active part in feminism movements, such as advocated for women's suffrage and became the first woman to register to vote in a school board election.
