Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
China nowadays witnesses great changes since the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy and the development of the science and technology. To meet people’s increasing demands of entertainment and knowing foreign countries better, a large number of audiovisual works, especially those works from English-speaking countries, rush into domestic markets. Therefore it becomes much easier for people to learn foreign language. Numerous imported films and TV series provide people with opportunities to relax themselves after a whole day of hard work. And a much more important thing is that it builds a bridge for people to communicate with foreigners and to get an outlook of foreign cultures.
Thus more and more people show great concern to researches on films and TV series. Among those researches, subtitle translation plays a crucial role. “Translating must aim primarily at ‘reproducing the message’.”(Nida & Taber, 2004) Translation, thus in this way, always transmits information. Subtitle translation, as a means to transmit information and background culture underlying in the subtitles of films and TV series, however, doesn’t attract enough attention when compared with other kinds of translation. Being a process of reproducing the message in another language, translation has appeared for a long time. Though people are engaged in translating manual or religious materials originally, the object of translation now has been widely spread, roughly ranging from literature and plays to signs, different kinds of files, advertisements, etc. Among all of these, subtitle translation plays an important role. Well-translated subtitles benefit people for it can not only relax and amuse people, but also allow people to experience and understand different cultures of other countries. Though subtitle translation has not yet been attached enough importance to, considering its significant influence on people, subtitle translation in films and TV series deserves to be better treated and needs further and deeper researches, as well as subtitle translation works of high quality. 从目的论角度看《老爸老妈的浪漫史》字幕翻译(2):http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_20895.html
