2.1 Bassnett's Cultural Translation Theory
2.1.1 Definition and Main Points
Among excellent translators, Susan Bassnett can never be neglected, for she has made great contributions to cultural translation.
Among criteria of translation, culture should be emphasized. Bassnett (2004) regards translation is communication between cultures and states that translation study is a true discipline and its right was neither of less important in the field of comparative literary study, nor a particular field of linguistics. It is a truly complicated area with many extensive ramifications. (Susan Bassnett, 2004:11)
In Bassnett’s book Translation, History and Culture, she demonstrates four points of rules:
First, culture is the unit of translation;
Second, translation is an act of communication, not a simple process of coding and decoding. Bassnett compares language to the heart and culture the organism. The two are interdependent and mutually influential. From the perspective of a heart surgeon, she should attach importance to the organism surrounded, so as to a translation process. Without the consideration of cultural factors, the translation would reduce the power of language.(Susan Bassnett, 2004, p. 22) 文化翻译观视角下《弟子规》中华夏礼仪文化传递策略研究(3):http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_22132.html
