2.1 Cooperative Principle
Herbert Paul Grice, philosopher of language, proposes The Cooperative Principle on his work Logic and Conversation in 1975. He presents that in our daily communication there exists the cooperative principle. The Cooperative Principle contains four maxims. They are the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relation and the maxim of manner. (Grice, 2002)
The maxim of quantity is that what you say should have enough information and should not have more information than is required. The maxim of quality is that you cannot say what is false and cannon say what lacks evidence. The maxim of relation is that what you say need to be relevant. The maxim of manner is that speaking need be clear, brief, orderly and perspicuous and avoid obscurity, avoid ambiguity. Furthermore, Grice concludes some situation in which speakers violate the Cooperative Principle. First, speaker tells lie. Second, speaker announces he cannot obey the maxims. Third, speaker faces the dilemma that he should violate one maxim to obey another. Four, speaker violates the maxim deliberately and wants to deliver conversational implicatures. (Grice, 2002)
Jin Ling and Zhu Shenhai have discussed that flouting the four maxims of the Cooperative Principle results in humor. They hold the views that understanding of conversational implicature, deictic words, speech act and premise can bring deviation and dislocation, which will contribute to the effect of humor. (Jin, Zhu, 2004).
