Title Exploring the Verbal Humor in 2 Broke Girls from the Perspective of the Cooperative Principle
Abstract
In everyday life, we need to observe the Cooperative Principle if we want our conversation go successfully. However, sometimes, the speaker will violate one or more maxims of the Cooperative Principle intentionally which may result in the humorous effect. In recent years, the American TV sitcom 2 Broke Girls has been adored by many young men at home and abroad. One reason why this sitcom succeeds is that it has lots of humorous lines by violating the Cooperative Principle. In this paper, some lines of 2 Broke Girls will be analyzed from the perspective of the Cooperative Principle.

1 Introduction
1.1 Research Background
For a dozen years, many Chinese young men have been addicted to watching American TV series, especially American TV sitcoms. From Growing Pains, Friends to the Big Bang Theory and 2 Broke Girls, each sitcom is followed by numbers of fans not only in America but also in China. Undoubtedly, TV sitcom is one of the most popular TV programs no matter in Western countries or in Eastern countries for its humorous lines.
The language of humor is usually implicit and reserved. It seldom expresses its frank opinions directly. Instead, it reveals the twisted phenomena in life by means of a euphemism. It drives people to think its inner meaning while laughing (Peng, 2000). In the ordinary course of events, the core of humor in a conversation is produced by violating one or more maxims of the Cooperative Principle. Therefore, in this paper, the humor lines of American TV sitcom 2 Broke Girls will be analyzed from the angle of the Cooperative Principle.
Analyzing lines in sitcoms enables English learners to improve their ability to enjoy the humors in sitcoms so as to deepen their understanding of English language (Ji,2013; Zhang, 2008). Besides, in American TV sitcoms, there are not only humorous plots and lines, but also American local conditions, cultures, and values conveyed.
