Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Thesis
The emergence of the Internet has led to huge changes in all fields of the society. Internet, as the fourth media, has created a new information exchange and dissemination and has brought a new communication environment and communication way, which has formed a new variant of the language called network language. While Internet buzzwords are the netizens’ common means of expression, they are the most active and derived from the prevalence of the network language. Moreover, with the further drastic development of the Internet and the increasing numbers of the users, Internet buzzwords has not confined in network and gradually permeated into people’s daily life and reflect the events and problems of the society and the life style and thinking pattern of people in a country during the certain period.
Since the deepened reform and opening-up and China’s rising global role and strong international impact, more and more foreigners expect to have an understanding about China. As a sort of the mirror of the contemporary China, Internet buzzwords are unavoidably attracted the eyes of foreigners. Affected by factors like cultural gap, different thinking pattern and life style, it is difficult for foreigners to grasp the essence of the Internet buzzwords and can even cause communication barriers. Thus, the translations of Internet buzzwords become important and urgent problems.
1.2 Significance of the Thesis
Many studies concerning Internet buzzwords’ translations are from the perspective of psychology, communication studies, sociolinguistic, lexicology and culture and comparative analysis of English and Chinese. But, this thesis holds a new theory--functional equivalence theory as its general theory in the translation of Chinese Internet buzzwords. That is to say, the first purpose of the thesis is to provide a new angle for the Internet buzzwords’ research.
Besides, it is known to all that the ultimate purpose of translating Internet buzzwords is to provide concise information to foreigners and promote the mutual communication and understandings between China and other countries. Thus, the thesis attempts to give fundamental information about the definition, sources and classifications of the Internet buzzwords.
Finally, by applying the functional equivalence theory into the translation of Chinese Internet buzzwords, the proper and effective translation methods of will be put forward which are helpful to improve the quality of the Internet buzzwords’ translation, resulting in the blossom of Chinese language and cultural communication.
1.3 Structure of the Thesis
This thesis is made up of five parts.
Chapter one is the introduction which states the background, significance and the structure of the thesis.
Chapter two is the literature review of the thesis that presents a critical review of studies of translations of Internet buzzwords at home and abroad and the limitations of the current studies.
Chapter three is the theoretical framework of the thesis that consists of two parts. In the first part, it presents an overview of Internet buzzword including the definition of Internet buzzword and the analysis of its sources and classifications. In the second part, it presents the origin, the definition, and features of the functional equivalence theory.
