Abstract In recent years, due to the economic slump, many companies face cutbacks on personnel. With an increasingly fierce competition in job hunting nowadays, the employment has already become a common concern. Under the current circumstances, graduates are difficult to be employed while their career goals play an important role in their future career direction to a certain extent.
It is known that the graduates from different cultures hold different thoughts on career goal. Through Hofstede’s culture dimensions, the deep-rooted reasons why Chinese graduates are confused towards the selection of their careers are going to be explored. The history, family and education in different countries make these dimensions different on career goal. In Western, personal values and social values have largely determined their career goal. Compared to Chinese graduates, they are more independent. They hope to gain a favorite job by their personal ability. In contrast, Chinese graduates are only eager for a stable job and a comfortable life.
My thesis falls into five parts. The first part serves as an introduction. The second part aims at analyzing the graduates’ different occupational status. In the third part, Hofstede’s culture dimensions build a theoretical foundation for the analysis of the reasons behind. The fourth part points out that the current situations are caused by the differences in history, family and education between China and western countries. The last part summarizes Chinese graduates should learn some good parts on career goal from western graduates. From this paper, the current university students can establish a correct and healthy career view since the very beginning of the entrance to the universities.
